Bringing Back The Joy In Cambodia

I know this is random but after years of travelling together, the videos taken 3 years ago still made my day :)

A million thanks to Satkuru. He, who managed to captured all the wonderful moments back in Cambodia, January 2009. Each time he compiled and post them up on Facebook, I’ll be able to have a good laugh over it and it reminds me of the splendid time we had in Cambodia. Not to forget, the crew made the trip a tremendous one. Hope you guys enjoy the videos!

Cambodia 01/2010: Day 5 in Siem Reap

Finally I have reached Day 5 of Cambodia and again, there are 51 pictures in this entry =) So, bear with the duration of downloading the page. Well, I know how sad to part with Cambodia as we will be going home the next day. After days of adaptation, and when we finally got used to the environment, that’s when we have to bid goodbye to this wonderful-dusty land.

Anyway, in Day 5, we woke up early and had a approximately 2-hour drive, for a hike.

Photobucket
[aL is in front of me]

Photobucket

and we saw this rock, which look like a mushroom to me!

Photobucket

Lord Siva admiring his wife.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

The thousand “lingha”!

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

After the 3-hour hike, we headed for lunch at the nearest restaurant available and the food was good! I love it.

Photobucket

Its so hot that day!

Photobucket

Then, we had another temple visit.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Take a break!
Nike commercial. =)
STOP staring at Satkuru’s leg . . . . . . . . . . hairy leg.

Photobucket

Ain’t it beautiful?

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

The carvings are simply amazing.

Photobucket

and this would be our last destination.

Photobucket

Also a temple but made of bricks.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Yupss… after a long day, its time for a hot bath back at the guest house and I think I did not post the picture of our room. So, here it is! You can now start guessing who is sleeping on which side of which bed =)

Photobucket

After the hot bath, we headed to one of the orphanage, something that I did not expect, honestly but I am glad I was there.

Here, that’s out tour guide, Ya, posing =)
He is really skinny, huh!

Photobucket

and the kids!
They are not sent to the orphanage but were found by the roadside or market. They are the victims of the land mines and one of them lost his leg due to that.

Photobucket

Their rooms, the study corner and the environment they are staying in. Its just like a kampung we have back here.

Photobucket

We shared some money and donated 100kg of rice to the orphanage.
William is one of the kuli!

Photobucket

*jeng, jeng, jeng*
The next very thing we did in Cambodia was a FULL BODY MASSAGE!
To be frank with you guys, that was my very first time having a full body massage and the experience was . . . tremendous! LOL! aL initially don’t wanna go for it. But well, in the end, she went for it as well.

Photobucket

Right after the massage, we told the driver to recommend some good places for food. A good dinner at least and he brought us to this place. He told us Khmer Restaurant but there were plenty. Hence, we simply chose one and headed in to fill our empty growling stomachs.

Photobucket
[... and I walk behind aL AGAIN]

Photobucket
[That was candid. Thanks William!]

Photobucket

While I was trying to camwhore, aL was busy picking her dinner.

Photobucket

I somehow like the ambiance of the restaurant.

Photobucket

. . . and I had a super yummy dinner.
Gosh, I have forgotten the name! But it was good!

Photobucket

Angkor beer!

Photobucket

This side of Cambodia surprised me.
I did not expect such places in Cambodia!

Photobucket

Look at it! It looks more happening compared to UPR!

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Variety of food and nice places to dine-in!

Photobucket

A themed-restaurant!
. . . and I suppose it is supposed to be a jail.
Anyone wanna have dinner behind those bars?

Photobucket

AGAIN am walking behind aL.
WHY?!

Photobucket

Photobucket

Ain’t these places beautiful?
I would love to dine in each and every restaurant here. Unfortunately, its our last night in Cambodia!

Photobucket

Would you love to be massage by the blinds? They will touch and feel you, but they won’t see you =)

Photobucket

This Rooftop Bar & Grill really did attracted me. But all I can do now is to pray, hoping that it will still be there the next time I go Cambodia.

Photobucket

Something that we would not missed after strolling around the happening area. . . we went to the night market again! Well, how would I forget those little souvenirs for my mates?!

Photobucket

Oh, I am so missing Cambodia now!

Cambodia 01/2010: Day 4 in Siem Reap

Another interesting day in Siem Reap without realizing that we will be heading home in another 2 days time. How time flies. We have been enjoying so much that we don’t even remember the day and dates! LOL.
We got up at 5am today. It wasn’t because of insomnia and this is really not common for me to get up at this hour. But knowing the objective, I feel its worth waking up at 5am. We finally stepped into the Angkor Wat, like those you always see on postcards! We were there with the purpose to capture the sunrise but it seems that, unskilled photographer like me was there for the sake of taking the picture as I can never get nice picture like them. Remembering that JJ told me on my face that pictures I took are not nice, which I have already gave up on SLRs.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Then we went back to Jasmine Lodge for breakfast and returned to Angkor again! Well I think its time for you to enjoy the pictures as I don’t remember where/what.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

The Holy Feet!

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Well, these four elements are surrounding the temple shown above.
Photobucket
Earth (Human), Fire (Lion), Wind (Horse) & Water (Elephant)

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Time for lunch!
Finally I get to sit. What a relief!

Photobucket

Hot like mad! Yup, we are back in Angkor Wat again!

Photobucket

The library!
Imagine if I wanna get to the library, I have to climb the super steep stairs.

Photobucket

But after getting up to there, I got to see nice views too.
I was so windy that I can doze off anytime.

Photobucket

This is the steepest of all steepy stairs. It was initially open for public but due to some unforeseeable reason, it was closed.

Photobucket

We took a tour around the entire place. If we were to play ‘hide & seek’, I bet we won’t be able to find any of us!

Photobucket

Photobucket
[My bag, camera & I]Photobucket

Photobucket

After a day of walking and climbing, I believe its time for some good food for dinner. Dinner was at Amazon Angkor Restaurant located at Salakanseng, Sway Dangkum. Some sort of international buffet serving variety of food.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
[Banana, anyone?]

At the same time, there will be performance from the locals on Khmer dance. 40 dancers, singers and musicians will perform 3 Palatine and 2 village dances. The first was the ‘Best wishes dance’. Traditionally, this dannce is performed to give blessings to kings, country leaders or official guests visiting the country.

Photobucket

Coconut dance
No, not girls in coconut shells but using the shells to rap a rhythm for the dance. This dance is from south-eastern Cambodia and is performed at wedding ceremonies.

Photobucket

Mekhala Dance
A metaphor for the victory of good over evil ; which armed with a crystal ball casting rays of lighting, the goddess of waters Moni Mekhala triumphs over the demon Ream Eysaur, whose axe creates thunder.

Photobucket

Fishermen’s Dance
This dance is a lesson of love and courtesy.

Photobucket

and lastly,
Apsaras Ballet

Photobucket

Every gestures in the palatine dances symbolises something for instance the stem, leaf, bud, flower in the bloom anf fruit.

Well, enough of eating and dances. With a stomach filled with food, we headed to the night market for souvenirs =)

Photobucket

Tired sia.

Cambodia 01/2010: Day 3 in Siem Reap

*yawns*
Yeaaa… we stayed up quite late last night ; not foursome but we were “blogging”!.

Photobucket

Good morning Siem Reap!

Photobucket

A wonderful cup of hot Lipton tea with milk, which you can get it back in Penang as well. Yea, the exact same thing.

Photobucket

Like I said, we have been eating like Kings and Queens here.

Photobucket

Extremely healthy and balanced diet.
2 fried eggs to start the day.

Photobucket

Ok! Jom, jalan-jalan!~
It has been quite some time since the last time I took a boat or a sampan or a ship or a . . . perahu or even a tongkang?!

Photobucket

Guess what?! We were on Tonle Sap. Yes, the lake that all of us had studied in Form 3′s geography! I never thought that I would be there floating with my camera and a bunch of cool back-packers!

Photobucket

Ahhh… the colour of the water is not favouring. It was a chilly yet sunny ride. I love it.

Photobucket

Okayyy. After a few minutes of boat ride . . .
We were ushered to see catfish. . . (was it catfish? correct me if I’m wrong cuz I only know how to eat fish but know not how to differentiate them XD )

Photobucket

Buayaa!!! I don’t know if they are mating =.=

Photobucket

Come . . . come . . . come into my mouth!

Photobucket

They live on floating houses and this should be their little kitchen or maybe backyard. I don’t know. What if their asses dibaham buaya? I don’t think I will get to see this anywhere in Penang. Cool, huh!

Photobucket

Aaron and THE PYTHON! *ahh! It reminds me of my tragical face!*

Photobucket

These kids came posing for us to take their pictures and then asked us for one dollar OR candies. They even gave us the option! Cool, no? They even translated, “Miss, do you have candy?” to MANDARIN! I was traumatized hence, no candies or one dollar given to them! =)

Photobucket

Ermm… floating village?! Imagine waking up the next morning knowing not where you are.

Photobucket

I know the picture taken is not nice but I just wanna show you the male corner for pee pee!

Photobucket

As we were heading back, we passed this floating school, with kids playing around the school. Not only around the school, but even up on the tree!

Photobucket

Then I saw this Korean lady. She turned around and posed for me. As I lifted my camera, 6 other SLRs which were floating with me were focusing on her! LOL! Can you imagine?! If I were her, I would be fainted and fall into the amazing river.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

I know what I should be focusing.
The ring! (Thanks for the trip!)

Photobucket

Next stop!
We were brought to Artisans Angkor where it was said that its the Rebirth of Angkor Arts & Crafts. There were variety of carvings which includes carvings on sand stones as well as rubber woods.

Photobucket

The picture is over exposed but just wanna show you the nice breast.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Basically this place provides a 6 months high-skilled training and a vacation from which they can make a living.

Photobucket

One of the masterpiece.

Photobucket

They are actually promoting Cambodian Fine Arts and Crafts.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Its hand made!

Photobucket

Photobucket

The golden bowls, which are used by the monks but usually use as a deco item at home.

Photobucket

Just look at their faces! LOL.
aL is shocked! o.O

Photobucket

Aaron with his kangkang pose!

Photobucket
["tripod"]

Look at the way he concentrates on his work or is he just pretending cuz he knows am taking his picture? Look at his eyes. He is not looking at the statue also.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

I don’t think I will have such patience to carve all these one by one.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
[Ehhh... Got private part also!]

Photobucket
[Face of a demon]

Lunch at Bayon Restaurant!

Photobucket

Who say we eat only insects in Cambodia?

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Dessert anyone?

Photobucket

The restaurant’s layout.

Photobucket

After lunch, the adventurous hiking and climbing begins. First would be the Bayon Temple at Angkor Thom. This visit already made me mulut ternganga. Imagine when I reached Angkor Wat. I wonder what will happen to me.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Sleeping Buddha which was partially damaged. Okay, the whole thing was damaged!

Photobucket

Photobucket

Like Hercules’s era, no?

Photobucket

Remember the tarantula William ate? Probably they stayed here before they were eaten by him! XD

Photobucket

Prayers time!

Photobucket

Photobucket

Spot the not!

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

I was so amazed + mesmerized + traumatized + etc by the entire architecture here!

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Flowers, finally =D

Photobucket

The “Khmer Rouge” junior! Spot Lee May? I think she is the only pharmacist who do mountain climbing with an SLR and a handbag!

Photobucket

Photobucket

This was the steepness of the staircase which we climbed all the way up to the peak of the temple. If I turned around when I go up most probably I would have rolled down, fast and easy!

Photobucket

Photobucket

Someone please recall me who was standing beside me in the shadow?!

Photobucket
[Aaron, ME & aL]
Am I right?

I seriously love the carvings.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Okayyy… I officially announce that I am lost within the temples but if I am not mistaken, this is the South Gate of Angkor Thom!

Photobucket

Photobucket

Elephant ride, anyone?

Photobucket

Yes . . . I hike up the hill with my flip-flop and look how beautiful my feet are =) Covered with MILO look a like =)

Photobucket

We were up there for sunset actually.

Photobucket

We were not the few ones who went up but there were MORE!

Photobucket

Ermmm… my Window XP’s wallpaper look alike. I was trying so hard to take a nice sunset but it ended up like that.

Photobucket

which is supposed to be the sunset =.= but ok lahh… I like pink colour also :)

Photobucket

Ahhh finally am done with Cambodia Day 3! =) So, how was it? Do you feel like visiting Cambodia now at this very moment? LOL. Wait till I blog about Angkor Wat on Day 4 then you will be booking the air tix! LMAO.

Cambodia 01/2010: Day 2 in Phnom Penh & Siem Reap

Good morning, Phnom Penh!
Its our second day in Cambodia and I was awaken by the busy morning market below our guest house.

Photobucket

After packing and washing up, we headed down to grab some bread for breakfast.

Photobucket

As we were rushing to hop up into our van, it so happen that there was a wedding ceremony right beside our guest house.

Photobucket

Anyway, today’s first visit would be to Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum Former Prison S.21 which this place was directed by Pol Pot in “Democratic Kamphuchea”. Honestly, I woke up without any expectation, knowing not where we were about to be hitting. But it seems that the first place we stopped by was a bit traumatizing.

Photobucket

It might look like a normal school. Indeed it looks rather peaceful and calm. But I never know that there were so many things happened between year 1945-1949 if I did not visit this place.

Photobucket

This place is windy and chilly.

Photobucket

This is just a classroom. Indeed this place was a school bofore 1974 . All the building’s classrooms were converted into small cells where prisoners were caged. It was used to detain the cadres who had been accused of leading the uprising against Pol Pot revolution.

Photobucket

The front of the buildings were covered with barbed wire, in an attempt to prevent any one from committing suicide by jumping down from the building.

Photobucket

I can’t imagine how much pain they went through seriously.

Next, would be the Killing Field, the Choeung Ek Genocidial Center.

Photobucket

From far, it looks nothing extra ordinary but once I stepped in, as I walked closer, I felt the thrill of this place.

Photobucket

Millions of skulls were kept after they were found around this field.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

This place was where the Khmer Rouge killed the million of the Cambodians.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Pieces of bones remaining after excavation in 1980.

Photobucket

There were tooth found.

Photobucket

This big shady tree was the spot whereby the executioners beat up the children and this tree is known as the “Killing Tree“.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

These are the clothes found.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

I felt so disturbed after this visit.

Photobucket

But well, thanks to Satkuru for the arrangement in such we visit the horrendous places first. Next, we headed back to our guest house at about 11am as we have a bus to catch at 12pm. Since we still have an hour left in Phnom Penh, we decided to make a trip to the Central Market.

Photobucket

Photobucket

The Central Market.

Photobucket

There were lotsa things to see or buy =) A combination of wet and dry market.

Photobucket

And surprisingly, this is the FIRST cat I saw in Cambodia. They do have lotsa dogs but not cats.

Photobucket

Photobucket

I suppose this is the only department store they have =.=

Photobucket

Photobucket

On our way back . . .

Photobucket

This *don’t-know-what-meat* was sold by the road side with all the dust.

Photobucket

This is ain’t S-21 or any other prisons. This is actually the doorway in the guest house we stayed. We actually have to walk through this path before we can get to our room.

Photobucket

and our room was located far end!!!

Photobucket

Anyway, the wedding ceremony was still on with loud blasting music.

Photobucket

As 12pm struck, we were ready with our bags for a 7-hour ride to Siem Reap, a better place to be =)

Photobucket

and
AGAIN!
My lunchhh!!!!

Photobucket

After about 3-hour ride, the bus stopped for a little toilet break. When I entered the Unisex loo, it has no latch or anything to lock the door. What happen if someone budge in when I am doing my business half-way?! Oh, nooooooooo! Well, there was a stick for you to tahan the door from the back =.=

Photobucket

Goodness! The 7-hour ride was an entire “honking session“. The driver kept on pressing the honk no matter what he sees ; motorcyclist, kids, cows, goats, etc

Finally, after the 7-hour ride, we reached our destination safely. No one were traumatized or anything. Alhamdullilah. First night, we have to sleep in pairs except for Satkuru, he has to sleep alone. So here is my room mate, pressing her hp.

Photobucket

We couldn’t bear much with our growling stomach. We quickly headed for dinner nearby, a walking distance coffee shop for food!

Photobucket
[Lemon shake]

Yea, I know its lime. But the locals call them lemon. Plus, my ever delicious Fried Rice. All together, 5000 Riel!

Photobucket

This is Angeline’s Lok Lak.

Photobucket

After dinner would be the jalan-jalan time and I was surprise when I saw there’s a Public Bank in Cambodia!

Photobucket

Photobucket

Scarfs anyone?

Photobucket

or would you like to go for a Birdy Massage / massage your birdy?

Photobucket

Photobucket

Off for supper when we were on our way walking back to Jasmine Lodge, where we stayed. Its suppose to be like our mix fruit dessert but somehow it has Milo on it.

Photobucket

So full can and extremely tired of course.
